Running an errand, ended up driving on 5 different highways... Northern State, Long Island Expressway, Sagtikos Parkway, Nicolls Road, and Sunrise Highway. It amazes me how many small highways are in LI.

All the little 2 lane "parkways" and tiny highways were so bizarre to me when I moved out to Nassau from Los Angeles. I'm still not sure I like the parkway system.

I bet! Although I've lived my entire life here so... uh, I am not exactly sure how it works outside of New York state

In LA, some portions of the 405 and other freeways can go 6 lanes wide, each direction. Old sections of some of the freeways get down to 2-3 lanes at some parts, but 4 is usually about the norm now. The LIE is the closest to thing to a LA area freeway.
Highways in Chicago (and a lesser extent Kansas City) actually remind me a lot of the parkway system here on LI.
